Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

10 REASONS TO LOVE HELENE

Helene is a character that is a lot of things. I loved feeling like I understood her more in this sequel. She is a character who I couldn't help but root for. For me, all of the, A Torch Against the Night, characters are vital to this story, but Helene is one I think sometimes gets over looked. Each of the character has grown tremendously through out this story, and Helene is the one that I felt, regardless of my top ten post, who grew the most. There's so many layers to this character. I greatly admire the strength she has. She has a strength that allows her to   act her part in the world she forced into, and it allows her to grow into a character who's capable of so much more than she thought she could be, and do. She battles a lot with who she once was, who is she now, and who she's forced to be. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Helene will do next, as the series continues.

Here are my ten reasons to love Helene. In no order:
  1. She is a warrior.
  2. She's fierce.
  3. Her strength. Helene posses both a physical and inner strength that gets her through the brutality of what she's forced to do, what she's endured, all that she has to deal with. Her weaknesses make her stronger. She's able to turn her vulnerability into a secret weapon of strength. She will not let anyone see her weak.
  4. She is courageous.
  5. She does not back down. Whether she's forced into a situation, or by choice, she will not back down from challenge.
  6. She's loyal to things that matter most, whether it's in secret or not.
  7. She's intelligent. She doesn't rush into things without having a plan, or having a knowledge of the situation she's about to put herself in.
  8. Deep down she knows who she is, even if she has to lock that person away for a time. She won't forgot the person she once was.
  9. She is a Survivor. This girl deals with so much. I don't know how she endured all she does. Much like her vulnerability, she turns her hurt, and brokenness into a strength that drives her. Her brokenness makes her unstoppable.
  10. She doesn't lose. I'll just leave it at that....There's so much more to what she's capable of doing to come. I for one can't wait to see what will happen next, because I don't think we've completely seen all Helene is destined to do, and all she's capable of doing.
