Interview with Sophie Jordan, author of Firelight

Happy Release Day to Firelight! My book shipped yesterday and I can't wait to see the published copy. Okay, I admit I'm secretly hoping it's a copy of the sequel, as I can't wait to find out what happens next with Jacinda, Cassian and Will. *I know I have a whole another year to wait*

Recently I was able to ask Sophie a few questions about Firelight and her writing:

I am totally team Draki! I really liked that each of the Draki's has a unique power. If you were a Draki, what power would you have?

I don’t know if I’ve created a draki ability/talent to suit me yet. Maybe I’ll have to work on one! ;) Although I love the water. It would be lovely to be a water draki like the draki character Az in Firelight who has the ability to remain underwater for however long she wants – essentially like a fish or mermaid. I had a pool growing up, and when I was a kid I would spend a lot of time holding my breath under water and pretending to be a mermaid. I was working that imagination even then! ;)

In three words, how would you describe Firelight?

Fantastical
Adventurous
Sexy

Your talent for writing romance makes for one of the best love triangles I've read. Do you find it easier to write YA paranormal or Adult paranormal romance?

I’m not sure one is easier … I can, however, tell you what I’ve discovered to be the biggest difference between writing paranormal romance and YA romance.
I don’t write love triangles in adult romance. In my adult romances the females are older and can plausibly settle their hearts more permanently on one man. That said, I feel that love triangles are better suited to young adult fiction. A teenage girl should be indecisive. She’s young! Play the field! It’s much more plausible for me to write about someone young, who’s struggling to find her identity and place in the world, also struggle to decide the desires of her own heart.
And what fun dangling more than one guy as a potential love interest!

I absolutely love Jacinda's character. She is such a strong female character. What is one thing we didn't learn about Jacinda in Firelight, that you could tell us about her?

What you didn’t get a chance to see in book one is Jacinda going about her daily life within the pride. For instance, she has a job/duty, and it’s working in the library.
Hmm … and one of her favorite movies is Rear Window … just like me! What a coincidence!
Oh, and this never came up in Firelight, but being a draki, Jacinda shares a sort of communion with wild animals. This just means that animals don’t see her as a threat … like they would with a human.

Can you give us any hints at what we can except in the sequel?

The book opens with a big twist! A good portion of the book is set within the pride, Jacinda’s draki home. You’ll see more of Cassian and other draki characters you didn’t get to see too much of in book one. You’ll get a little more insight into the enkros. There’s a lot more action … and steam – I’ll let you wonder if I’m talking about Jacinda’s fire-breathing ways or steamy scenes with a certain boy! Maybe it’s both!

Exactly why I'm so anxious for read the sequel! Thank you Sophie for your time and for the swag you sent to us being on Team Draki!

Twitter Tuesday - Julie Kagawa

In case you didn't catch the release of an Iron Queen excerpt yesterday on Twitter, here it is from Julie's website.

A SPOILER WARNING: If you haven't read The Iron Daughter, you may be spoiled a little. And yes, it's about Ash:
His forehead bumped softly against mine, his brilliant silver gaze searing into me. “I plan to keep you, from everyone, for as long as I’m alive. That includes Puck, the false king, and anyone else who would take you away.” One corner of his mouth quirked, as I struggled to catch my breath under his powerful scrutiny. “I guess I should’ve warned you that I have a slight possessive streak.”
The Iron Queen will be released on February 1, 2011 and some of us are anxiously waiting for that date just to read more about Meghan, Ash and that possessive streak of his.
